The first new drug to treat ED was the Viagra pill.
In a major clinical trial in June, researchers from the University of Cambridge, UK, found that two new drugs, Vigra, and Eroxon, had been tested in healthy volunteers for more than eight years.
The trial, dubbed the ‘Viagra trial’, was designed to test whether the drugs, in the doses that are prescribed to men with ED, are working for the treatment of men with sexual dysfunction, but also for a generalised sexual desire.
The researchers assessed the effects of the drugs in the volunteers who were given Vigra alone or Vigra plus an active control drug. The effects of the drugs were compared in healthy volunteers, men who were taking Vigra alone, men who were taking a drug called Viagra, or men who were taking a drug called Cialis. The drugs were given in pill form every six hours for six weeks.
Results showed that the drugs were able to improve sexual arousal in men with ED, but the effects were limited in the majority of subjects, who were taking the drug alone.
The drugs were given in a daily dose of 20mg and 60mg, taken on an as-needed basis. The drug effect was similar for both groups, so the drug had a similar effect on the body, which was not a placebo effect.
“Viagra and Cialis were not likely to have any effect on sexual desire for men with ED,” the researchers wrote in the clinical trial. “They are now recommended by doctors as safe and effective treatments for this condition.”
A UK study published in the July issue of the journal International Journal of Sexual Medicine found that the drugs were no more effective than placebo in the treatment of men with ED who were taking a placebo.
Researchers concluded that the drugs were “comparable” to the placebo group and, in the majority of cases, “could be the treatment of choice”.
The trial is one of the first drugs to be licensed as a treatment for ED and it has already been licensed in the UK for the treatment of the condition.
